Hebe
Our route through XinJiang:

  1. Day: Flight to Urumqi (5 hours flight from Shanghai), Check-In in the hotel and washing Heibi’s backpack intensively, since it got wet and smelly on the flight. We did not really want to know what has caused this, but Heibi asked me “do they transport animals as well?” If they do I guess it was either a Camel or the rare Uyghur desert rat.
    - And it still smells, so that I had to consider the wind direction during our hiking trip….

  2. Day: Enjoying a windy day in Urumqi, best BBQ mutton, pigeon, Nan and one bowl of  Camel milk as a replacement for coffee (Nobody needs a Starbucks. And XinJiang is still Starbucks free. J ) In the evening we set off on a sleeping bus towards Burqin (11 h and the beds are not sized for people like me). First encounter with my later favorite breakfast in Burqin.
  3. Day: 2 h car ride from Burqin to the starting point of our hiking trip in the borderland of Kazakhstan.
25 KM hiking towards Hemu village, rewarded with nice scenery and a perfect camp ground at the end of the day,

  4. Day: 10 KM hike to Hemu village. Watched the sunset, ate 14 BBQ mutton skewers which I regretted a view hours later, watched sunrise, bought 27 Nan and 4 apples, an entire cabbage (was not my idea and the horse had to carry it…) and one pack of noodles after having a vivid discussion with our experienced travel companion.
  5. Day: Made good friends with some people from Guangzhou on our 2 days hike with one overnight stay in a yurt. Food: Plain Nan and 1 apple per day and my favorite breakfast: Butter tea with “Barzakh, Warzakh, Wazak..???”. I do not know exactly how to spell, but I succeeded ordering it.
  6. cc
  7. Day: Arrived in Kanas Lake, where the owners of the guesthouses had a fight about the new arriving tourists... Kazakh “signoras” can be very rough …
  8. Day: looking around in Kanas and bus ride back to Burqin. In case you you have the chance to go there once visit the night market and have dinner at kitchen no. 9 (BBQ Fish, Mutton skewers and very fresh yoghurt prepared by an old Kazakh woman).
  9. Day: Bus to Ghost City  - 6 hours  (Fight on the bus…), hiked to the middle of the desert like area, pitched the tent, watched the scenery and sunset, prepared a cold doner kebab with green tomatoes and got tipsy with beer and wine. The ghost did not show up that night…
  10. Day: 6 hour bus ride to Urumqi and Turpan (below sea level). At the end of this day on the bus we were rewarded with BBQ Chicken on the night market in Turpan. I was already crying for it on the bus…. (Best chicken ever! After having eaten a whole sheep, half a goat and tons of Nan the days before…)
  11. Day: Grape Valley, Jiaohe (ancient city, 2200 years old and almost nothing left) and walking through the desert in the afternoon. Dinner and wine for 500 people, but we were only 7. J As far as I remember there was also one dish with vegetable, which was occupied and finished by Heibi. My parts of communication were over-praising the food and empty the wine together with our hosts (drinking one by one, actually 5people against me). I have been ordered to do so (Josef, behave well!! – I knew what was meant by this friendly reminder and I got good feedback later on.)…  But it helped me on the 2 hour taxi ride back to Turpan. Because I had to watch and listen to XinJiang music DVD all the way down. My companion (the good one) had also enough wine and fell very soon into a deep sleep as soon the music started (must be because of her Uygur roots) – I watched it.
  12. Day: Walking around on the bazaar in Turpan, having breakfast there, watching people and dead sheep’s, buying a nice hat, Nan, raisins, nuts and Wine for the 22h train ride to Kashi/Kashgar in the very west of China.
  13. Day: Relaxed day. Organizing a car for the trip into Pamir Mountains (not that I did or could…), eating a fourth of a sheep and a one kilometer long noodle (that was my part…) and riding a bicycle to the outskirts of Kashi.
  14. Day: On the road… Pamir Mountains…  In the evening we arrived in Tashikurgan (Stone City), where we met the next uncle. Again, I was ordered to behave good … (do I really need to be reminded again and again??? J) But this time it was extraordinary important to behave well, since this uncle was a military officer and provided me with the permission to cross the border to Pakistan. I behaved well but failed in the paying part. Anyway, we saved money, which we have collected before. ….I had to pretend to be the rich “laoban” and presented proudly my 500 RMB (50 EUR). But as you already know, I badly failed.
  15. Day: crossed the border to Pakistan on an elevation of 5100 meters above sea level, went back to China and were invited for a noodle soup in the border station (the uncle organized it..). So, we are the rare ones who ate noodle soup 5100m osl. After the soup we went back to Kashi to eat half a sheep. – I like talking about simple things, if you have not noticed it yet ….
  16. Day: It never rains in Kashi! ... But not when we are there...
(Best and first warm shower on the trip)
Firstly we completed our sightseeing mission (Mosque and Bazaar) before we entered the first restaurant, Guess, what we had for lunch… After that we found a nice coffee before we decided to continue our tour through the old city before we were allowed to have dinner.

  17. day: flight to Urumqi, 4 hours sleep in a “very luxury hotel”, flight to Lanzhou, flight to Nanjing, Train to Shanghai
